A Welcome from the Music Director
Dear Music Lovers,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 5th Anniversary of the Glacier Symphony and Chorale’s Festival Amadeus. This exciting summer we will focus on the music of Mozart, Beethoven and others in anticipation of the GSC’s 30th season, playfully themed Rollin’ with Beethoven.
Our special guest artists for Festival Amadeus 2012 include Los Angeles acclaimed violist and musical mentor Paul Coletti, a soloist featured during the first year of Festival Amadeus in 2008, and the extraordinary violinist Tim Fain, also making a return engagement to the festival. Our new soloists this summer will be cellist Amit Peled and pianist Alon Goldstein, both highly prominent internationally acclaimed musicians. I invited Amit after his recent inspired performance of the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Glacier Symphony in October 2011.
What to expect this week: in celebration of our 5th anniversary we are proud to offer two chamber concerts, one string orchestra concert, and three orchestra concerts featuring concerto soloists and the wonderfully talented Festival Amadeus Orchestra. A few musical highlights of the week include: Paul Coletti and Tim Fain will perform together and separately in a program of music from Mozart to Philip Glass. Amit Peled and and Alon Goldstein will team up to present a program focusing on works for cello and piano. Clarinetist Dinah Weimer will join the duo for Beethoven’s wonderful Clarinet Trio in Bb major.
Festival Amadeus begins Sunday, July 22nd with our new tradition, the free admission Open Air Concert featuring the Festival Amadeus Orchestra and violinist Tim Fain. The program will offer a few violin showpieces by Dvorak, Saint-Saens and Kreisler in addition to orchestra selections by Beethoven Rossini and, of course, Mozart. This will be a great kick off for the week in the relaxed, outdoor environment of Depot Park.
You may also want to join us Monday night for the Virtuoso Violins Auction. The event is a special 30th GSC anniversary fundraiser event with wine tasting (boutique Italian and Austrian wines in honor of Mozart!), socializing with friends and guest musicians, and silent auction bidding on one of 11 works of art created on actual violins. Be sure to attend this special event.
As the week continues, the final three concerts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will feature great soloists performing exciting concerti, overtures, symphonies and more. We will be offering two world premieres, Planets a brand new Viola Concerto written and performed by Paul Coletti and a new piece of my own, Concerto Rustica for clarinet and string orchestra. The piece was actually composed in the 1980's but has not yet made its performance debut. Other concerti include Telemann’s Viola Concerto, Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor, “Summer” from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi, Cello Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, the first penned by him. More orchestra works by Rossini, Haydn, Mendelssohn and again, Mozart will complete these exciting orchestra concerts!
All in all this will be a very special 5th year. You will not want to miss one single concert. I hope to see you throughout the week at Festival Amadeus.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank all those in our GSC organization and many of you who generously support Festival Amadeus. You are are instrumental to our endeavors.

Friday July 27, 2012 Orchestra Night 2
Shostakovich 1 - Beethoven 1
Festival Amadeus Orchestra
John Zoltek, conductor
Amit Peled, cello
| Mozart | Impresario Overture |
| Rossini | Barber of Seville Overture |
| Shostakovich | Cello Concerto No. 1 Op. 107 |
| Beethoven | Symphony No. 1 in C Major |
This exciting concert features cellist Amit Peled performing the dramatic, evocative and intense Cello Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich, Although 20th century in language, the cello concerto is built firmly upon a classical architecture with clearly stated themes that are developed in a formally taut musical architecture. The first movement has a relentless unforgettable 4-note theme that is carried throughout the
entire work. The moderato movement is deeply human and the following solo cadenza, in the hand of a virtuoso soloist, can be an existential cosmic experience. The finale is a rhythmically complex earthy stomp!
Haydn’s deeply lyrical “Drum Roll” symphony is a tribute to that composers’ masterful classical design. Sparkling overtures by Mozart and Haydn open the program.
Saturday July 28, 2012 Orchestra Night 3
Beethoven and Mozart’s “Haffner”
Festival Amadeus Orchestra
John Zoltek, conductor
Dinah Weimer, clarinet
Alon Goldstein, piano

| Mozart | Symphony No. 35 in D major Haffner |
| Zoltek | Concerto Rustica for Clarinet and String Orchestra (Weimer) |
| Beethoven | Piano Concerto No. 2 in Bb major, Op. 19 (Goldstein) |
| Mendelssohn | Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor Op. 21 (Finale) (Goldstein) |
Our Festival Finale concert highlights internationally acclaimed pianist Alon Goldstein and his interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 in Bb major. This was Beethoven’s first concerto composed throughout the years 1787-89 as a vehicle for his own great virtuoso talent when he first began to establish himself in Vienna.
Clarinetist Dinah Weimer captures the solo spotlight for the world premier of Concerto Rustica by Maestro Zoltek. This one movement concerto is written in a Romantic-Modernist style with interesting rhythms, arching themes and a richly dramatic harmonic language. Mozart’s popular and tuneful Symphony No. 35 in D “Haffner”opens the program in grand style. The vigorous final movement of Mendelssohn’s G minor Piano Concerto will function as an exciting programmed encore.
