Our season opens with Franz Liszt’s brilliant Romantic orchestral showpiece Les Preludes one of his most popular tone poems in the repertoire. Mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert returns to our concert stage (Carmen in 2008) to sing the enigmatic and transcendent orchestral song cycle Sea Pictures, a work of haunting beauty and orchestral imagery by the English Romantic composer Edward Elgar. The concert will conclude in grand dramatic style with Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet music from Swan Lake the immortal musical fantasy tale of tragic supernatural love.

Masterworks II: An American Journey: Voices and Visions – November 06, 2010

The Glacier Chorale and Chamber Singers will present a musical tribute to America in five sets with titles borrowed from Katharine Lee Bates’ famous lyrics in the song “America, the Beautiful”:

Performed the weekend before Veterans Day, this concert is a musical and visual journey that celebrates America’s historical foundations and traditions and our country’s optimism and hope for the future. Special arrangements of inspirational songs such as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” “The Mansions of the Lord,” “God Bless America,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “The Star Spangled Banner,” and “America, the Beautiful” will be sung by the 70 select voices of the Glacier Chorale and Chamber Singers. Because of overwhelming audience enthusiasm for their efforts at last November’s Chorale concerts, media specialists David Reese and Greg Naive will project photographs that complement the songs to a screen above the stage for a multi-sensory musical experience.

The selections in this concert are as diverse as the landscapes, people and values of our country. Come join the Glacier Chorale and Chamber Singers for The American Journey: Voices and Visions.

Masterworks III: Rhapsodic Light – November 20, 2010

Rhapsodic Light features works by Wagner, Sibelius, Richard Strauss and Brahms.

The concert begins with Wagner’s luminous Parsifal Prelude, a work of broad themes and noble sentiments. Sibelius’ March from Karelia Suite will provide an up-tempo contrast and set the stage for our soloist Jonas VanDyke who travels from his orchestra position in Bejing,China to perform the alpine inspired masterpiece, Horn Concerto No. 1 in Eb Major by German Late-Romantic Richard Strauss, a work that has long been a favorite performance vehicle for French Horn virtuosity. The concert concludes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 in F Major possibly the most enigmatic and pastoral of his four symphonies, full of rich melodies, flowing polyphony, light orchestral timbres and engaging rhythms.

The Glacier Chorale and Chamber Singers accompanied by the Baroque and Beyond Ensemble present Handel’s sacred oratorio in a performance version that highlights selected chorus and instrumental movements from all three sections of the work including And The Glory, For Unto Us a Child Is Born, And he Shall Purify, Behold The Lamb of God, Surely He Hath Born Our Griefs, Hallelujah Chorus and many more.

The Glacier Symphony presents wonderful jazz songstress Jeni Fleming and her Quartet in a fabulous evening of jazzy seasonal romantic music. Luxuriate in the silky sound of Jeni’s voice and swinging musicians enhanced by the sound of the symphony as we offer lush arrangements of popular standards like Alfie, Come Fly With Me, Once Around The Sun, If I Ever Leave You, and others in addition to seasonal selections like A Child is Born, Button Up Your Overcoat, Get me through December, Let It Snow and other selections from her recent album entitled “December” So… button up your overcoat and snuggle up to someone you love for December Romance.

Floating World, Roaring Mountain takes you on a musical journey through three distinctive countries. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of American composer Alan Hohaness we present his visionary and cataclysmic Symphony No. 50 “Mount St. Helens” a remarkable work composed in the 1982 which captures the sonic imagery of the quiescence, mystical nature and eruption of the famed volcanic environs. Violinist Megan McClendon will offer the peacefulness and tranquility of The Lark Ascending a quiet different lyrical inspiration from nature and the English countryside by Ralph Vaughan Williams. John Zoltek’s Going To The Sun, a bold and rugged orchestral fanfare was composed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Glacier National Park. Also on the program will be the popular Vlatava (The Moldau) from Bedrich Smetana’s “My Country” the epic musical national emblem of the Czech people.

The combined forces of the Glacier Chorale, Glacier Symphony and four soloists will offer a very special sacred concert featuring two of the most significant Requiem masses in the choral symphonic literature. The French composer Maurice Durufle’s work is considered to be a 20th century masterpiece of the genre with it’s Gregorian Chant inspired melodic arcs, evolving harmonies and tranquil atmosphere. Composed in 1947 the Durufle Requiem exists in three versions. Our version is a setting for organ, three trumpets, harp, timpani and string orchestra with full chorus and mezzo-soprano and baritone soloists. Mozart’s immortal Requiem was his last composition that was left unfinished at his untimely death in 1791. Completed by Mozart’s assistant Sussmayr, the Mozart Requiem is a supreme example of Mozart’s religious-dramatic style that fused elements of the Viennese Classical sacred style with Italian and German operatic elements. The work is set for reduced orchestra, chorus and four soloists. Our performance features the fine vocal work of soprano Gina Lapka, (Sound of Music 2008 / Fallen Heroes 2009), mezzo-soprano Kimberly James, making her debut with the GSC, tenor Jeffrey Kitto (Carmen 2008) and the popular baritone Ricardo Herrera (Carmen 2008 / Festival Amadeus 2009).

Our spectacular season finale The Dancing Emperor features the young American piano virtuoso Andrew von Oeyen performing Beethoven’s great Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb major “Emperor” A work both classical in design and romantic in gesture, a true test of a pianist’s technical mastery and musical depth. The Beethoven concerto will be eloquently complimented by the robust and richly melodic Symphony No. 8 in G Major by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. Opening the program will be Emmanuel Chabrier’s jubilant and celebratory Fete Polonaise from his opera The Reluctant King. This will be a concert full of virtuosity, passion, dynamic optimism and musical drive. A worthy finale that will “Ignite Your Senses”
